‘Veep’ is one candidate worth supporting on Blu-ray

veep-season-one-blu-ray-coverNew to Blu-ray from HBO Home Entertainment is the new series from the creator of the similarly politically charged “The Thick of It” and “In The Loop” Armando Iannucci, Veep. Starring “Seinfeld” vet Julia Louis-Dreyfus and a handful of improv veterans like Tony Hale and Matt Walsh, Veep has all the quick witted retorts and lightning fast dialogue that has become a trademark of Iannucci productions, but also features the slapstick sensibilities of SNL vet Louis-Dreyfus as well. Set in the ‘other offices’ not in the white house, Veep explores the desperation and idiosyncrasies of a power hungry woman that cannot manage to escape the mediocrity that surrounds her position.

Veep Season 1 Blu-ray

Starring: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Anna Chlumsky, Tony Hale, Reid Scott, Timothy Simons, Matt Walsh and Sufe Bradshaw

Created by Armando Iannucci

veep_gq_9jul12_pr_b_642x390 ‘Veep’ is the story of former Senator Selina Meyer (Louis-Dreyfus) who has accepted the call to serve as Vice President of the United States. The job is nothing like she imagined and everything she was warned about. ‘Veep’ follows Meyer and her staff as they attempt to make their mark and leave a lasting legacy, without getting tripped up in the day-to-day political games that define Washington.

‘Veep’ starts off with a slow introductory episode, introducing the characters,  the story development and placing the major players in place. But where it really takes off and shows its true layout and form is with the excellent 2nd episode ‘Frozen Yoghurt’. It’s in this episode that we really start to feel the scrambling ineffectualness and the overexposure of the most minimalistic of events in the life of the Vice President, that for the team always seem like the end of the world if they go wrong. Every minute detail is under a microscope here and with Iannucci’s acerbic wit and ever watchful eye; he may have created one of the most complete worlds of any of his creations in the Veep and her staff.

veep-season1-11The cast is pitch perfect here, made up mainly of improv veterans, the whole cast is able to fly off the cuff and deliver the staccato dialogue effectively. This is the funniest thing Louis-Dreyfus has done since Seinfeld’s heyday and the role fits her life a glove, or perhaps a perfectly fitted pant suit. Child actor grown up Chlumsky is also great as Serina’s right hand woman, her “My Girl” innocence left in taters behind her. Matt Walsh and Tony Hale standout among the rest of the great cast, Walsh uses his UCB background to great effect as he is always on point, and Hale’s Gary Walsh, as Serina’s ‘Body Man’ who’s there to help her with everything, may be one of the funniest characters on TV at the moment.

Veep-Season1-Still8The Blu-ray comes packed with special features as we get a behind the scenes feature with interviews and footage and a whopping 12 audio commentaries for the 8 episodes with cast and crew participating. Also included is some in-character moments from Louis-Dreyfus that add to background to some plot points that happen in the season as well as a plethora of deleted scenes and outtakes from the production.

veep 2Veep seems poised to be another winner in the seemingly never-ending pantheon of great productions coming from the HBO stable.  The show picks up steam and momentum as the season goes along which makes the prospects of seeing where the story evolves for Season 2, currently playing on HBO,  that much more exciting. The Veep season 1 Blu-ray is a strong buy recommendation.

The Blu-ray is currently available in stores and is selling for under $35 on
